Lake Creek Baptist Church was founded in 1852, with Lorenzo Dow Hartwell as being the one that donated the land upon which the church and cemetery would have its beginnings. The church is located on Hartwell Church Road, which is what many of the older generations commonly refer the cemetery and church as: "Hartwell Church & Cemetery". The Lake Creek Baptist Church ceased to exist around 1863 for a period of nearly a 10 year timespan. However, in 1871, the congregation re-instituted and has remained an active congregation. Today, Lake Creek Baptist Church is an active and strong rural Southern Baptist Congregation (SBC). They are are member of the Williamson Baptist Association and the Illinois Baptist State Association.
